Stone House History - A book of stories as thick as the walls.
Two-foot-thick stone walls. Maybe David Sisson, a merchant and mill owner who built the house in 1854, loved them for their fortress-like
protection from the elements, or perhaps they just made a statement about the man’s determination.
From the beginning, the impression was clear the residence was not a farmhouse but a dwelling
of distinction, designed as a country house shaped for summer hospitality.
Henry T. Sisson, Civil War Colonel and Rhode Island Lieutenant Governor from 1875-1881,
was deeded the property from his father in 1857, and he lived well
overlooking Round Pond and the Atlantic, serving as the property’s last private residence owner.
The 1920s and 1930s saw the stately manor change to a grand inn. Jonathan Rawson, held title
from 1959 to 1975, when the Moore family purchased and managed Stone House.
By inviting nature into the design process and welcoming guests with attentive service and thoughtful amenities,
it will be an unequalled destination.
